| CHARLTON HOUSE Edward Charlton and Jane Hunter were colonial entrepreneurs who moved from England to establish businesses in Virginia. After arriving in Williamsburg, they net, married and moved into this spacious two-story house on Duke of Gloucester Street. Edward Charlton opened a barber and wigmaking shop next-door top the Raleigh Tavern. His account books revealed this to be an excellent location, drawing a prestigious clientele that included Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and George Wythe. Jane Charlton, together with her sister Margaret Hunter, operated a successful millinery shop on Williamsburg’s main street. In 1929, Williamsburg architects removed Victorian porches from the house, thereby restoring it to its original appearance. |
