| Dr. Baurrad House With its pleasing repetition of rooftop dormers, opposing chimneys and well-proportioned porch, the Dr. Barraud house is a study in symmetry and classical design. Probably built around 1782, this early Virginia house was the home of Dr. Philip Barraud. Barraud was born in Virginia and learned medicine while serving in the Revolutionary war. He moved to Williamsburg and eventually set up a medical practice with local apothecary, John Minson Galt. In 1783, Barraud married Anne Blaws of Norfolk. When restoration of the house began in 1942, a 19th-century porch was replaced with one more typical of the period. Architects looked to 18th-century precedents in designing the distinctive Federal style columns and Chinese lattice railing. |
